3 Reasons to Avoid Using Carpet Deodorisers for Pet Odour

cat

When your dog or cat pees on your carpet and you’re desperate to get rid of the smell fast, you may think the best solution is using a carpet deodoriser. After all, the name suggests that it’ll deodorise your home and clean away the urine smell.

However, more often than not, using carpet deodorisers on pet odours is a bad idea. Here are three reasons to avoid deodorising powder — and what you should try instead.

They Can Make Smells Worse

The whole point of using carpet deodorising powder is to get rid of bad odours. However, deodorisers can actually make the pet urine smell in your home even worse.

Imagine spraying perfume onto someone who hasn’t showered for a week. The perfume might temporarily mask the scent of bad hygiene, but it wouldn’t clean the body, and it wouldn’t last forever. The same goes for carpet deodorisers. All they do is add a pleasant smell to an unpleasant one, temporarily tricking your nose into thinking the smell is gone.

Once the deodoriser wears off, your carpet will smell as strongly of pet urine as it did before — if you’re lucky. What’s more likely is that your carpet will actually smell worse, as now the scent of urine will be mixed with the faint, sickly odour of an artificial cleaning fragrance.

The reality of deodorisers is that they can make a carpet smell good, but only if you’ve removed the source of the bad aroma first.

They Can Harm Your Pet

You may not like the odour your pet produces, but you definitely won’t want your furry friend to get hurt because of it. At first glance, deodorising powders may seem safe for pets. As long as you put the powder down while your pet’s out of the room and vacuum it up before you let them in, there’s no harm done, right?

Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. When you use a deodorising powder, it’s virtually impossible to vacuum up every last remnant of the residue. When your pet returns to the room and sniffs around, they’ll be inhaling small amounts of the deodoriser. When your pet cleans itself, traces of chemicals will end up on their tongue.

Most commercial deodorising powders are full of chemicals which can be harmful to pets. That’s why household cleaning products, including floor cleaners and odour fresheners, are known to cause a range of serious health problems in pets, from anaemia and seizures to cancer and organ failure.

While some deodorisers are specially formulated without chemicals so they’re safer for pets, even these options can cause adverse reactions over time when pet owners repeatedly using carpet deodorisers.

They Can Damage Your Carpet

Getting rid of urine odour is no good if it ruins your carpet. While a good deodorising product won’t directly damage your carpet, it can if it’s used improperly.

Using it on a wet or damp pee spot, for example, can lead to clumps of powder getting stuck in your carpet fibres. When you try to remove this solidified deodoriser, you can rip out or break the fibres.

In addition, any chemicals can break down your carpet or fade the colour if used repeatedly. As you will need to use a deodoriser continuously if you’re attempting to cover up a bad urine smell, this is a legitimate concern to consider.

What Should You Do Instead?

Instead of using carpet deodorising products as a quick and inefficient fix, the best way to get the smell of pet urine out of your house is to have your carpet professionally cleaned. Professionals know how to get rid of that awful odour once and for all without exacerbating the bad smell, hurting your furry friend or causing damage.

Professionals have the tools to extract pet urine odours and carpet deodorisers and replace those two ugly scents with fresh ones. For example, our product Pet Urine Removal Treatment, or PURT, can save even the most severely damaged areas of your carpet and leave them smelling beautifully.
