DIY Carpet Cleaning Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Carpet

carpet cleaning

If you pets, children, or both then you are no stranger to stains and odours. You likely have tried many cleaning solutions, and even a few DIY options, to get rid of the odours and stains. The problem is, some of the methods and techniques you find online and in social media may be spreading or trapping the odours and stains instead of eliminating them.

Here are a few of the DIY carpet cleaning mistakes that may be damaging your carpet and making it more expensive to clean.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

A mixture of baking soda and vinegar is a common DIY remedy for a variety of stain removals. The basic idea is to take baking soda and place it liberally over the stain. This will soak up the remaining stain-causing liquid and keep it from entering the carpet further. It may also help pull some of the stain from the carpet fibres and into the baking soda.

Once the baking soda has rested on the stain, vinegar is added to cause a chemical reaction. This reaction is supposed to remove the stain and the odour.

The problem is, it often breaks down the carpet fibres and can lock in stains and dirt that were already present. This can make it difficult to clean the area with traditional at-home methods, including steam cleaners.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are a common ingredient in many DIY home cleaning solutions. Tea tree oil, lemon and other oils are used to help fight bacteria as well as clean the odour from the carpet. The issue with these solutions is that they can damage your carpet and they simply cover the odour; they don’t remove it.

In addition to only masking the odour, the oils can adhere to the carpet fibres as well as the padding. This makes it difficult to remove dirt and can make it difficult to remove odours and liquids from the padding of the carpet. Over time, the smell of the oils can mix with the odours that are already present and cause more odours in the area.

Rental Machines

Rental machines may seem like the ideal option for the occasional deep cleaning of your carpet. They are geared to be a budget option for most people and are set-up so that everything you need can be purchased with the rental. The truth is, these rental machines may be bringing more issues than they help.

One of the major issues with these rental machines is the ability to easily misuse them. Though there are slots for cleaning solutions, you may find that they are easy to overfill or underfill. This could leave you with too much soap in the solution. Too much soap can lead to overuse of water to remove it, which can cause water damage and mould.

Small Carpet Cleaning Machines

Small carpet cleaning machines are a common purchase and can be beneficial when you have common stain and odour removal issues. The problem is, most people tend to use these for bigger carpet cleaning tasks and avoid hiring professionals when necessary. The small cleaning machines may also not be doing the job you need them to.

For example, small cleaning machines do not have the power of the truck-mounted units used by professionals. They also aren’t precise when it comes to detergent and removing the dirt. They are general-purpose, meaning they are made for common stains. If the stain is set in or if there is an odour you can’t remove, like pet urine, then the small machine may not work.
