Types of Filth Kids Introduce to Carpet

When you have little ones running around at home, carpets are a good investment. Carpets give your children a soft and warm surface to play on, and they offer better protection against injuries suffered during falls. Unfortunately, carpets can also be challenging to keep clean, especially when your home has toddlers and young children.

Because children are so active, they encounter all kinds of dirt and grime, and much of this mess can end up on your floors. If you have children at home, be wary of the following types of dirt and grime.

1. Soil and Sand

Loose soil is abundant in many buildings. The most common way that soil finds its way into your carpets is on the bottom of shoes — and bare feet! If your toddlers and young children spend a lot of time outdoors during the summer, your carpets might contain a copious amount of soil.

And soil doesn’t just stain carpets. Soil contains sand and fragments of rock, which can gradually wear away at carpet fibres. Moreover, in high traffic areas, wear and tear will occur much faster due to the constant pressure of feet crushing the sand into the carpet fibres.

2. Oil and Sweat

If you let your children roam the house barefoot, which is perfectly normal, their natural oils will seep into your carpets. This happens through sweat glands in their feet, which secrete half a pint of sweat each day. Moreover, if you regularly apply lotion to your children to keep their skin healthy, that might also get into your carpets.

These oils are bad news for your carpets for two reasons. First, natural oils like sweat attract microbes, which can then proliferate in your carpets. Bacteria produce secretions that stain your carpets and give off unpleasant odours. Moreover, oil attracts other types of dirt, such as soil, and causes it to stick to carpet fibres. In other words, oil and sweat leads to stains and nasty odours.

3. Food and drink

No matter what you feed your little ones, they are bound to make a mess at least some of the time. During summer, when the ice-lollies and ice creams abound, your carpets will be especially at risk of food bombardment. Aside from the obvious stains that food and drink causes, you should worry about the moisture they introduce to your carpets.

Even if you manage to mop up spilled ice cream or drinks quickly, moisture may still seep into the underlay. When this happens, mould can form. Not only does mould cause allergic reactions in asthma and hay fever sufferers, but it also stains your carpets and leaves them smelling musty and old.

4. Dead insects

When children play outside, they are bound to bring creepy crawlies into your home from time to time. On hardwood flooring, squished insects are easy to spot and clean. However, the same is not true for carpets. According to a team of entomologists who surveyed 50 homes in North Carolina, rooms with carpets contain more insects than rooms with hardwood floors.

Many of these insect visitors die and become trapped in the fibres of carpets. Unfortunately, these insect husks act as food for microbes. As they feed and multiply, those microbes slowly damage your carpets, while releasing foul odours. Worse, if you don’t notice those insect husks, you might end up crushing them into your carpets, something that will lead to stains and unpleasant odours.
