You often don’t notice things like carpets when you live with them every day. You can’t always see them objectively when they are so familiar to you.
You may think that regular vacuuming is enough to keep your carpets in good shape. However, your carpets themselves could give you hints that you need to take a closer look. They may need a deeper professional clean.
What should you look out for?
If you’ve spilled stuff on a carpet in the past, then you may have cleaned up the stains with spot removers. These treatments took out the worst of the stains; however, some remnants probably remain. If you look at your carpet in a certain light and can still see where a stain was, then it is essentially still there.
Other areas of your carpet may look discoloured through everyday use. For example, if your family members walk across a carpet in their shoes when they come into the house, then they could track in mud. You’ll have hoovered up most of this dirt, but some may stick in the carpet, creating a stain of its own in the pile.
Take a long hard look at your carpets in daylight and at night with your lights on to get different light perspectives. If you can see stains or discoloured areas, then you should schedule a professional clean.
When you vacuum carpets, you remove a lot of everyday dirt but not all of it. Over time, dust and dirt settle into the pile. The carpets look clean enough, but the debris inside them starts to smell musty. So, for example, you may walk into a room and feel that it smells a bit stale.
If you have pets, then these smells get more obvious. Cat and dog hairs get stuck in the pile; accidents can leave traces of urine, faeces and vomit in the carpet. You’ll find it hard to clean these substances out completely.
If a room smells musty or a bit too of much of your pet for your liking, then your carpet probably needs a deep clean. The easiest way to confirm this is to get down on the floor and smell it.
If you vacuum a carpet regularly but it doesn’t look that good afterwards, then you might think that your vacuum has a problem. However, the problem might lie with your carpet.
Your efforts with your vacuum remove loose debris from the top of the carpet. However, your cleaner isn’t likely to be powerful enough to get right inside the pile. Dirt, dust, pet hairs and stain residues sit under the surface. So, your carpet may look dirty and dull even after you clean it; its pile may look flat.
To check if you have trapped dirt in a carpet, get down on the floor after you’ve vacuumed. Give the carpet a hard whack with your hand and see what happens. If you see dust motes fly up, then you need a deep clean.
If someone in your home has allergies, and their symptoms flare up for no good reason, then your carpet may be the culprit. If it holds a lot of dust, then this can set off dust allergies; pet hair and dander in the pile are also an issue for anyone who is allergic to pets.
You can often tell if a carpet contains allergens because people start to show symptoms in the room. For example, if one of your kids has a dust allergy and starts sneezing after sitting or lying on the floor, then your carpet could do with a deeper clean.
